The Competition

Climate Exploration Hub, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, the European Development Fund and Senca Reseach is pleased to announce the Climate Hackathon 2017: A Youth Climate Social Entrepreneurship Competition. We are calling out to youth as partners for the implementation of their ideas which are geared towards addressing climate change impacts in Botswana and achieving the Paris Agreement.

Climate Exploration Hub is a registered social enterprise in Botswana. We bridge the gap between research, policy, climate change action and development. The platform stands to catalyse practical climate action for sustainable development in disaster risk reduction, livelihoods management, renewable energy, climate change adaptation and mitigation. It aims to become a trusted knowledge broker amongst individuals, communities, NGOs, private entities and governments engaging in climate resilient development.

Target Audience

This challenge is seeking youth as agents of climate action through social enterprises. As an applicant, you must be passionate about climate action, social entrepreneurship and social innovation and be willing to create social change.

• Selected participants will receive limitless networking opportunities to enhance their climate business innovations.

• Selected participants will receive financial and non-financial support to test and implement their ideas.

• Selected participants will attend the Climate Hackathon in Gaborone, Botswana in January 2018 to pitch their ideas.

Guidelines and Requirements

• Age bracket: 18 – 35 years at the time of application

• Computer literate

• A citizen or resident of Botswana

• Have a climate innovative solution to a community problem which is at the early ideation stage. The idea should have a social impact.

• Applicants must be committed and available throughout the programme to attend training, workshops and pitch day.

• Reporting Requirements: Selected applicants will be expected to pitch their idea infront of an audience.

Timeframe: Applications are due by December 01, 2017 at 11:59 GMT

How to apply

• Step 1: Take time to research what a social business or social enterprise is, and to clarify your business idea.

• Step 2: Take time to research on the impacts of climate change in Botswana, Government plant to address climate change impacts and international responses to climate change.
